Almost certainly for purposes of keeping the traditional GM abbreviation.
They mention that the GM is a Editor in Cheif. They go in a bit of comic book analogy at the start if the GM guide.
I am sure if you started calling your self Editor in chief they will not mind.
GM is just an easy to understand term. It also let people know it is a role-playing game.
I asked the guy running my session at GenCon if there was going to be a cutesy term for the GM and he said that they had considered it, but decided to make it more descriptive/traditional to make things easier for people new to RPGs.
