So, there was a Q&A, some actual play, and maybe other hints about the much-awaited Sentinel Comics RPG at GenCon, right?

What new things did we learn?  Has anything changed from last year?  Did any enterprising con-goers grab pictures of a few more Hero datasheets?

I did get pictures, but I haven't had a chance to download. Will make them available ASAP, but if someone else beats me to it I won't complain…

eviltoon asked Christopher about the RPG at the meet and greet, and Christopher said that post OblivAeon is when he will be working on the RPG.  The demo was (I believe) pretty much the exact same demo they've been running.  The system, a few characters and a mission.  There's a whole lot more needed before they have it ready for kickstarter.

We got some tidbits on the story:

When OblivAeon is defeated the timelines stabilize into 2 lines.  One turns into the Tactics timeline (after 5 years) and the other becomes the RPG, after only a short while.  Apparently time travel and hopping between the lines is no longer possible.

I got this info when I asked about the incap side of the new hero Stuntman (they had the proof copy of the foil promo set) which has a bunch of scarring.  I asked Adam if that meant Ambuscade in Tactics was scarred like that now, and he said he didn't know about Tactics, but in the RPG he has more scars.

I'm really interested to see what caused the split and what made them initially different, but that's plot and Adam seems more inclined to talk about the characters than the evnts.

I never saw the foil set. Only a few of the FV foil cards at the booth in the Dealer hall. Would love a sneak peak if anyone has pics of them.

The old story was Gene-Bound human scientists opening a portal to mars. Is that what was run at Gen Con? And were the character sheets 1 page or 2?

Right.  What we had previously was character sheets for the Freedom V plus Unity, and a general rules reference sheet.  Last GenCon, the demo game was Voss' minions attacking the earthside opening of a portal up to Wagner Base (with a fight against Voss himself as the climax), and BurnEverythingGaming was good enough to stream a session involving Ambuscade and a bomb.

I am, of course, interested in any and all new information.  The "holy grail" for me, however, would be information on how (non-Minion) villains work.  The GM information has never been posted online, and Ambuscade went down without actually succeeding at an action, so that's a pretty big black box at the moment.  The only thing I can recall learning at all is that Voss has two modes, modeled after his two sides in the card game.

My secondary questions, to anyone who played, would be:

  • How does Recovery work?
  • How do Challenges work?
  • Did we get sheets for any other heroes?
  • Between the main villains and minions, we've heard of both "lieutenants" and "big-ass starship minions with special rules" - these may or may not be the same thing.  What are they like?

I did not get a chance to play the RPG, but I do have the SRD and the characters from the one-shots being run. They are VERY much "just an alpha test/teaser taste" and explicitly not ready for us to really dive into/work with yet, which is more or less what Christopher told me at the meet and greet. More or less, "we love your guys's enthusiasm, but this can not be on my radar until after OblivAeon". Which I think is fair, if frustrating-- I'm so so into this RPG and enthusiastic for it.

I will take a look at the SRD they have for this sneak preview, and let you know if I can digest some answers for you, but I definitely got the impression - and want to push it across - that this is all very Subject To Change / Refinement and still being roughed out.

Could you clarify what you want me to explain further? There's a number of things there.

SRD is "System Reference Document". Sorry, that's super RPG geek terminology to just assume and type out-- it's definitely a bit deeper a geek dive than many have done in that realm. System means, broadly, 'how the game works', so an SRD is a 'document for the rules of the game'. So the D&D core book would be the SRD for D&D, in a greater sense, but it usually means stripped down to the bare bones. No flavor text or anything-- just the rules and nothing but the rules.

Ok what did Christopher mean when he said and what did you ask him exactly

I did not record him, so I can't tell you what he said exactly. I did not record, so I can't tell you what I asked exactly.

But the thrust of my question:
Me: "When will the playtesters get to playtest the RPG? It looks done enough for us to at least take a peek."

I don't remember as well his exact words, nor do I feel they're really so precisely needed. But the thrust was that the game is being worked on, but it's not ready for playtesting and he doesn't want to give people just bits and pieces. He explained that the game is not ready for playtesting. The current thing we have - the RPG being shown here at GenCon this year and the prior - is functionally almost the same, and is just a preview to sort of 'feel out' the game. It needs more work before it's ready for us to work on and improve it.

I look forward to when it is ready. Other Q&A questions came out with the idea that next year will have a proper introductory version of the game, at least. Playtesters can expect more after OblivAeon was the sense of it that I got.

Okay! I've (finally) downloaded my Gen Con pics. Here is what I got from the RPG. I did ask the GM, and he said it was fine to take pics.

There were actually three sheets for each character, but in my quick glance at what they had and were doing, it looked like most players weren't using the third page at all, like it was just a character reference or something. You can see a bit of it in Bunker's pic, but I didn't try to get a picture of it, as it wasn't even availaable for most of the characters (as the players had it under the other pages).

My apologies for the quality and angle of some of the pics. I was trying to not interrupt the game too much, so I was in a hurry and taking all my shots from one side of the table. And my personal domain is having issues, so I can't load the pics there like I usually do, so I'm going to try Dropbox. I cropped them to decrease the size, too.

The last pic is of the play area. You can see how the GM has cards for "Minions", and I think the other two were "Flunkies" and "Big Bad". The GM put dice on the cards to indicate the challenges currently being faced, if I understand correctly. (Anyone who played the demoes, please feel free to share what you experienced!)

Belatedly, Rabit, thanks for the information!

It looks like the big difference is replacing "Costs" with the more narrative-driven "Twists," which seems like a good thing.  In particular, Legacy now having to deal with more trouble for himself, rather than accidentally inflicting destruction on the environment, feels much better to me.

Also, it seems like there is indeed a new adventure - "Primal Wrath."  Clearly, that's in Insula Primalis, though I'm not sure of the villain.  Dawn?  Akash'Bhuta?

Sadly for me, there's not a lot of info on villain mechanics here.  It does look like recovery is just straight-up "regain Stress equal to a die," though, like damage in reverse, so that's neat.

Cam Banks, the lead RPG guy, just launched his Patreon. It won't be providing content for Sentinels (for legal reasons, and other reasons), but thought you guys might like to know all the same, as there will be Q&As and just a general view into his mind.

He's a gifted creator. Figured I'd mention it!
